II. Characteristics of Broaching

Higher productivity method of making the surface have higher accuracy and smaller roughness.

When a tool is under pressure rather than tension at the time of cutting, the tool is called a push broach(picture-1b). A push broach is easily broken and bends, and it has limited length, so it’s not used as widely as a broach.

Compared to other cutting methods, broachinghas the following characteristics:

(1)The broaching process has only mainmovement (broach moving) and no feed movement (done based on the rise per toothof the broach itself), so the machine tool (broacher) has simple structure;

(2)The broach is a kind of multipoint tooland can simultaneously complete rough and fine machining in one stroke, so theproductivity is very high. Relatively low cost in case of mass or batchproduction, and more prominent efficiency especially when machining largequantities of holes with special shape;

(3)The machining accuracy can reach H7 level and the roughness can be within Ra0.8μm due to low broaching speed, smooth and stable broaching process and very thin cutting layer. For the broach with a floating extrusion ring at the tail, the roughness can be further reduced to about Ra0.2μm;

(4)Relatively low requirements to the workmanship and skill level of operators;

(5)Low machiningcost, that's because the broach has a long service life and high machiningproductivity, and one can process numerous workpieces (a repaired and groundone can broach hundreds of to tens of thousands of workpieces), even though thebroach is expensive. However, the application of broaching has certain limitations,namely, workpieces with a blind hole or a boss on the machining surface cannotbe broached; the broach has relatively complex structure and high manufacturingcost, so it is only applicable to mass or batch production.
